Witkoff called Ukraine talks productive
Washington (dpa) — The United States and Ukraine have held talks with and without European representatives on ways to end the war in Ukraine during three days of negotiations in Florida.
The discussions between Ukrainian and US negotiators covered multilateral security guarantees as well as US security guarantees, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Ukrainian lead negotiator Rustem Umerov wrote in identical posts on X on Sunday.
They said the talks also addressed further development of plans for Ukraine’s economic recovery, as the country continues to fend off Russia’s invasion.
“Over the last three days in Florida, the Ukrainian delegation held a series of productive and constructive meetings with American and European partners,” the posts said.
“Ukraine remains fully committed to achieving a just and sustainable peace,” they added.
Ukrainian, Russian and European delegations were in Miami over the weekend to continue negotiations to end the war launched by Russia some four years ago, though no direct talks were held between Ukrainian and Russian officials.
Ukrainian, US and European representatives had held talks last Sunday and Monday in Berlin amid an intensified diplomatic push to find a solution to the conflict, and US negotiators said they would relay the results from Berlin back to Russian representatives in Miami.
Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, described the Miami talks as “constructive” after the first round on Saturday, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
“Over the last two days in Florida, the Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev held productive and constructive meetings with the American delegation to advance President Trump’s peace plan on Ukraine,” Witkoff said in a post on X.
None of the sides involved revealed whether actual progress was made.
