US Canadian Norad
Washington (dpa) — Aircraft from the United States and Canada are soon expected to arrive at an air base in Greenland, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Monday.
The step has been agreed with Denmark, and the Greenlandic government has been informed, NORAD wrote on X.
NORAD, a joint US-Canadian defence organization responsible for monitoring air and space to protect North America, said the aircraft would soon arrive at the US military airbase Pituffik Space Base in Greenland.
From there, they will support NORAD’s long-term activities, “building on the enduring defense cooperation between the United States and Canada, as well as the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Announcements like this would not be particularly noteworthy under normal circumstances. However, US President Donald Trump has laid claim to the Arctic island of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, sparking fears of a conflict between allies that is causing deep uncertainty for the rest of NATO.
According to its own statements, NORAD routinely carries out missions to defend North America. The organization’s commander reports to both the US president and the Canadian prime minister.
