Trump threatened Venezuela’s Rodriguez

Washington (dpa) — US President Donald Trump has threatened Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, a media report said on Sunday.

“If she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than [Nicolás] Maduro,” he said in a phone call with the magazine The Atlantic.

The publication did not release the exact question to which this was a response, nor did it clarify whether Trump had specified what he meant by “right.”

Maduro was captured and taken out of the country by US special forces early on Saturday.

Following Maduro’s violent ousting, Vice President Rodríguez assumed the role of acting president on the orders of the Supreme Court until new elections, according to local media reports.

The military, the decisive power factor in Venezuela, has already backed her.

On Saturday, Trump claimed at a press conference that the United States would temporarily lead Venezuela and that Rodríguez was ready to cooperate.

However, she remained defiant. On Saturday, she demanded Maduro’s release and described the US attack as a violation of the UN Charter. “We will never be slaves again,” she said, addressing Trump.

China Calls on U.S. to Release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and His Wife at Once

Beijing, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — China called on the United States to release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife at once, said a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on Sunday.

The spokesperson made the remarks in response to media reports that on Saturday, the United States sent forces to seize Maduro and his wife and took them out of the country, and that the governments of multiple countries have voiced opposition.

China expresses grave concern over the U.S. forcibly seizing Maduro and his wife and taking them out of the country, said the spokesperson, adding that the U.S. move is in clear violation of international law, basic norms in international relations, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

China calls on the United States to ensure the personal safety of Maduro and his wife, release them at once, stop toppling the government of Venezuela, and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation, said the spokesperson.
