Washington — US President Donald Trump has played down French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that he intends to recognize Palestine as a state.
Macron is okay, Trump said, but added “here’s the good news, what he says doesn’t matter.” The French president’s statement “doesn’t carry any weight,” he said.
On Thursday evening, Macron announced on X that France would recognize Palestine as a state in September before the UN General Assembly in New York.
Shortly afterwards, Israel and the US condemned the plan. Writing on X, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Macron’s decision as “reckless”, and sserted that it “sets back peace.”
It was, Rubio wrote, “a slap in the face” for the victims of the massacre carried out by the Hamas and other militant groups on October 7, 2023 in Israel.
The attack, in which more than 250 people were abducted to the Gaza Strip and more than 1,200 people were killed, triggered the war.
