(The Dallas Morning News) Texas National Guard troops have been deployed, according to Gov. Greg Abbott, after President Donald Trump requested the troops be sent to Oregon and Illinois to protect federal officials.

Abbott posted to X at about 7:50 p.m. Monday a picture of troops with riot shields loading onto a plane on an airport runway. The post calls the Texas National Guard “elite” and says they are “ever ready” and were deploying.

The post does not specify where the troops are deploying to. On Sunday, Abbott made a post to X which said he had authorized Trump to call 400 members of the Texas National Guard to help defend federal officials and employees. The post was in response to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who had posted about Trump asking for Texas troops to be deployed to Illinois, Oregon and other locations in the U.S.

During his second term, Trump has repeatedly sent troops to cities, saying they are needed to combat high crime rates. He recently described Portland as a “NEVER-ENDING DISASTER” that is “run like a Third World Country” in a post on Truth Social.

Both Portland and Chicago have recently been the scene of large-scale anti-ICE protests.

Both Illinois and Oregon have filed lawsuits seeking to block deployment of National Guard Troops.

Oregon’s lawsuit was filed Sept. 28. On Saturday, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee, blocked the administration from temporarily federalizing the state’s guard.

The administration on Sunday then tried sending troops from California and Texas to Oregon following Immergut’s order on Saturday. Immergut issued another order Sunday night that prohibited National Guard members from any state or federal agency from being sent to Oregon.

Illinois filed a similar suit Monday.
