Switzerland froze Maduro’s assets
Geneva (dpa) — Switzerland says any assets held in the country by deposed Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro have been frozen, after his seizure by US special forces.
The measure is intended to prevent any of Maduro’s possible assets from leaving Switzerland, a statement by the government in Bern said on Monday.
The freeze also affects Maduro’s associates, but does not apply to current members of the acting Venezuelan government, it said.
The Foreign Office in Bern has not yet disclosed whether and how much of Maduro’s assets or those of his associates are held in Switzerland.
Should legal proceedings reveal the funds are of illegal origin, Switzerland intends to use them for the benefit of the Venezuelan people, the government said.
The United States attacked targets in Venezuela early on Saturday, capturing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and taking them to the US, where they are due to stand trial on charges including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine.
