New York — The United Nations on Thursday said it opposes an expansion of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
“We stand firmly against any escalation of the conflict,” UN spokesman Farhan Haq said in New York. “It’s already been extremely ruinous.”
Had said the conflict has already caused “more than 60,000 casualties” in almost two years of fighting.
“There’s the prospect of huge levels of humanitarian suffering, including potential starvations that that could worsen if the conflict gets gets worse,” the spokesman added.
The comments came as the Israeli Security Cabinet met on Thursday to discuss further steps in the war in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has outlined his support for a full occupation of Gaza despite opposition from military leaders amid fears an escalation of the fighting could endanger the remaining hostages held by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
