Sources: G7 Won’t Issue Joint Declaration at Trump’s Return Summit

Berlin (dpa) — The G7 group of leading democratic economies will forgo a comprehensive joint declaration at its upcoming summit, the first attended by US President Donald Trump since his return to office, German government sources said on Thursday.

Instead, host country Canada expects only “selected statements on specific topics” to emerge from the three-day meeting in the Canadian Rockies, which begins on Sunday.

According to Berlin, agreed topics at the meeting in a mountain lodge in Kananaskis, Alberta may include migration, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, forest fires and critical raw materials.

However, there is expected to be no unified G7 position on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, nor on climate change or development aid – all of which are points of contention between the Trump administration and the other G7 members.

The group — comprising Canada, the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan — last failed to issue a full joint declaration in 2018, also during a Canadian-hosted summit with Trump.

Although a final communiqué was initially agreed, Trump abruptly withdrew his support via Twitter during his return flight.

Subsequent years under president Joe Biden saw a return to the traditionally detailed G7 summit declarations.
