Moscow has intensified strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure in response to attacks on Russian-controlled territory, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday. online news

“Against the background of the failure of the so-called ‘counteroffensive’, Kyiv… has focused on carrying out terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure,” Shoigu said.

“The intensity of our strikes against Ukrainian military facilities.. has been considerably increased,” he added.

Russia said Sunday it downed Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow and the Crimea peninsula it annexed in 2014, the latest in series of attacks on the capital, border regions and annexed-Crimea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later said “war is returning to the territory of Russia… this is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process.”

Shoigu said the army had taken “additional measures to increase protection against attacks from the air and the sea”.

The Kremlin said the recent drone attack on Moscow was “an act of desperation” by Ukraine due to setbacks on the battlefield.

Ukrainian Shelling Kills Two in Eastern Donetsk: Local Officials

Ukrainian shelling on Monday killed two people and wounded six in Ukraine’s eastern city of Donetsk controlled by Russian forces, Moscow-installed authorities said.

“This morning the Ukrainian Armed Forces shelled the centre of Donetsk,” the Russian-installed head of the Donetsk region Denis Pushilin said on Telegram.

Donetsk is one of four regions — with Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — that Russia claims to have annexed despite never fully controlling them.

“A bus was destroyed by the shelling… Two people died and six were wounded,” Pushilin said.

The Donetsk region has been partially occupied by Kremlin-backed separatists since 2014 and its complete capture is one of Russia’s primary military objectives in Ukraine.

Its main city has seen several deadly strikes since the beginning of the offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.
