Mayor Mamdani condemned
New York (dpa) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has condemned the the US military attack in Venezuela, ordered by US President Donald Trump, as a violation of law.
“Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law,” he wrote on X.
The US “captured” the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife Cilia Flores in surprise airstrikes on multiple targets on Venezuelan territory early on Saturday, Trump said.
Mamdani said the “blatant pursuit of regime change” not only affected those abroad, but also New Yorkers, including the tens of thousands of Venezuelans who called the city home.
“My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker, and my administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance,” he added.
Mamdani was sworn in as mayor of New York City on Thursday, becoming the first Muslim and the youngest in generations to take the oath of office in the largest city in the United States.
