Hospital: At Least 38 Palestinians Killed Near Aid Centre in Gaza

Gaza (dpa) — Medical sources in the Gaza Strip said on Monday that Israeli soldiers shot and killed more than 30 people near a humanitarian aid distribution centre.

More than 200 Palestinians were also injured in the incident in Rafah, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry.

Staff at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis reported 38 deaths.

The Palestinian WAFA news agency said that Israeli forces reportedly opened fire on civilians near the distribution point.

The Israeli military said soldiers had fired warning shots at people who were advancing and posing a threat in the area.

It said it was aware of reports regarding casualties and was reviewing the details.

WAFA, citing medical sources, said at least 56 people had been killed in Israeli attacks throughout Monday.

The information from both sides could not initially be independently verified.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by Israel and the United States, began its mission in the Gaza Strip last month after Israel’s nearly three-month blockade of aid deliveries.

The distribution centre is intended to be an alternative to UN efforts and those of international aid organizations.

Israel and the US say the GHF would also prevent Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas from appropriating humanitarian aid.

But there has been widespread criticism of the foundation and repeated deadly incidents near its distribution centres.
