Tel Aviv (dpa) — The Israeli Air Force says it has attacked an Iranian refuelling aircraft at Mashhad Airport in eastern Iran, some 2,300 kilometres from Israeli territory.
This would make it the furthest target struck by Israeli forces since the beginning of the large-scale attacks launched against the regional rival on Friday.
The Air Force said it was “operating to establish aerial superiority over Iranian airspace.”
Israel has been attacking targets in the Islamic Republic for more than three days – including nuclear facilities, defence positions, cities and oil fields – in what it considers to be a pre-emptive strike to prevent Iran from further expanding its nuclear capabilites.
Leading military figures and nuclear scientists have been killed in the attacks, which have prompted retaliatory Iranian strikes on Israel.
According to official figures, dozens of people have been killed and hundreds more injured in Iran since then.
At least 14 people have been killed and 390 injured in Israel since Friday, officials there say.
