Tehran/Washington (dpa) — Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi on Wednesday threatened the United States with retaliation if it enters the war on Israel’s side.
“If the Americans get involved… our hands will not be tied,” Takht-Ravanchi said in an interview with the US broadcaster CNN, adding that his country would not be restrained in its response to a US intervention.
“We will do whatever is necessary to protect our people and our interests,” the deputy foreign minister stressed.
The US government supports Israel in its defence efforts, but has said that it is not yet participating in the military conflict between Israel and Iran, though US President Donald Trump is weighing that possibility.
For nearly two months, the United States and Iran had been negotiating under the mediation of the Gulf emirate of Oman before Israel launched a major attack on Iran on Friday, targeting nuclear facilities, military installations and sites in major cities. Iran has responded with intense missile strikes against Israel.
