Injuries Reported in 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Western Turkey

Istanbul (dpa) — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook western Turkey on Sunday, with tremors felt as far away as Istanbul and Izmir, more than 200 kilometres from the epicentre in Balikesir province, the disaster control agency AFAD reported.

The quake struck at a depth of 11 kilometres. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told CNN Türk that at least three people were injured, and efforts were underway to contact two others trapped under rubble.

Television footage showed collapsed buildings, and rescue workers pulling a man to safety. AFAD said six aftershocks followed within the first hour.

Turkey sits atop multiple fault lines, making it highly prone to earthquakes. The metropolis of Istanbul, home to millions, is particularly vulnerable.

The February 2023 twin-quake disaster killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and thousands more in neighbouring Syria.
