Hamas rejects Trump’s claim
Gaza (dpa) — Hamas has rejected claims by US President Donald Trump that the Palestinian group has turned down several reasonable offers for a ceasefire in Gaza.
“The Hamas Movement has never been an obstacle to reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip,” the extremist group said in a statement issued on Tuesday, following remarks by Trump at the UN General Assembly in New York.
“The US administration, the mediators, and the entire world know that war criminal [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is the sole party obstructing all attempts to reach an agreement,” the statement continued.
In his speech to some 140 world leaders, Trump said he has been “deeply engaged in seeking a ceasefire in Gaza.”
“Unfortunately, Hamas has repeatedly rejected reasonable offers to make peace,” he added.
He urged world leaders not to forget the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and called on the group to release all hostages.
In its statement, Hamas said it was Netanyahu who rejected the latest ceasefire proposal by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Hamas called on the US to stop Israel from continuing its military campaign in Gaza.
