Germany Hormuz mission
Paris (dpa) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said his country is ready to participate in a multinational mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, preferably with US involvement.
Merz was speaking after consultations hosted by France and the United Kingdom in Paris on a potential mission by Western partners to secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Participants aimed to draw up a multinational plan to safeguard international shipping and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz once security conditions allow.
While French President Emmanuel Macron has said he prefers an operation that does not involve the warring parties – meaning Israel, the United States and Iran – Merz said Berlin would like to see US participation “if possible.”

“It would be desirable from our point of view,” he said.
Germany is prepared to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz by supplying mine clearance and maritime reconnaissance, according to the chancellor.
“We are capable of doing that,” Merz said, adding that Germany would take part in further military planning talks.
He also cited the need for a clear legal basis for the German Armed Forces or Bundeswehr to participate in an international operation after the war ends, for example in the form of a UN Security Council resolution.
In addition, a decision by the government, a mandate from the Bundestag and a viable military strategy are required, he added.
