EU’s Kallas Urges Israel to Halt ‘Heavy-Handed’ Response in Lebanon

Brussels (dpa) — Top EU diplomat Kaja Kallas on Monday called on Israel to cease its current military operation in Lebanon charging that the operation is leading to mass displacement and the destabilization of an already fragile situation.

While Israel had the right of self-defence in response to recent attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia, its response “has been heavy-handed,” Kallas said.

“It risks drawing Lebanon and its people into a war that is not theirs, with severe humanitarian consequences,” Kallas said in a statement.

“Israel should cease its operations in Lebanon. Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected,” she added. “Diplomacy and a return to the ceasefire offer the best chance of averting Lebanon from sliding into chaos.”

The immediate priorities now were preventing further loss of life, displacement and regional escalation, she said.
