EU foreign ministers Ukraine Middle East
Luxembourg (dpa) β European Union foreign ministers are to meet in Luxembourg on Monday to discuss rapidly evolving conflicts in the Middle East and in Ukraine.
EU ministers are to be joined by Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha for insights on the battlefield situation and Kiev’s most urgent aid needs, but likely also for a debrief on the latest US-led diplomatic efforts.
The consultations come days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump at the White House and after Trump announced he was going to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, on EU soil.
Ministers will also discuss EU proposals to use billions of euros in Russian assets to finance a reparations loan for Ukraine and the 19th package of sanctions on Russia including a ban on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
Monday’s gathering is also the first meeting of EU foreign ministers since a ceasefire entered into effect in the Gaza Strip.
The EU has been sidelined in the efforts to end the fighting between Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas and Israel, but senior officials have stressed that the bloc aims to take an active role in securing stability in the region.
EU countries have however been struggling to find a common position on the war with a proposal on hold to impose tariffs on imports from Israel to sanction the Israeli government over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Other topics on Monday’s agenda include the bloc’s relations with the Indo-Pacific region and current developments in Sudan, Moldova and Georgia.
