Taliban Officials Report a Bomb Blast At a Checkpoint

Kabul, Afghanistan (ANS) — On Sunday, government officials in Afghanistan had issued a statement, which indicated that a bomb had exploded near a checkpoint at a military airport in Kabul. online news

According to reports, several people were wounded and at least one person was killed.

Although no group claimed responsibility, observers say that likely Islamic State had launched the attack.

Since the Taliban took over in 2021, IS has been increasing the number of attacks, observers & analysts say.

Reportedly, IS’ base of operations is located in Khorasan province.

In October, the Interior Ministry was the site of a suicide bombing; that incident killed four people.

The military airport is not far from the Interior Ministry and other government ministries, the presidential palace and various foreign embassies.

Officials of the Kabul police were not available for comment.

The Wilson Center’s website indicates that on “December 27, 2016, Russia, China and Pakistan warned against the growing threat and influence of the Islamic State in Afghanistan after a third consultation meeting in Moscow.”

During Syria’s civil war, which began in 2011, the government in that country claimed that the US, and other Western countries, including the UK, were supporting Islamist groups, including those affiliated with IS, in an effort to overthrow the one-party Batthist, but secular government.

Some weeks after the civil war had commenced in Syria, during a press conference, a State Department spokesperson acknoweledged that the US had been providing millions of dollars of support, which included weapons, to opposition groups seeking the overthrow of the Batthist government.

Following the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in September 2012, it was reported that the US had been operating an arms entrepot in Benghazi.

The entrepot had been a source of arms that were being sent to Syria in support of Islamist groups operating in that country.

From the late 1970’s through the 1980’s, the US, in particular, the CIA and Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, had been supporting and supplying Afghanistan’s Mujahideen. which had been waging guerilla wafare against Soviet forces in Afghanistan.

In 1979, the Marxist government in Afghanistan had invited Soviet forces into its country, as a response to Islamist groups operating in Afghanistan during that period.
