Moscow (dpa) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has replaced the governors of two regions bordering Ukraine, according to a decree published on Wednesday.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, left the post “at his own request,” the decree said.

General Alexander Shuvayev has been appointed as acting governor, while Yegor Kovalchuk was appointed acting governor of the Bryansk region, succeeding Alexander Bogomas.

The Belgorod region is bearing the brunt of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The region has repeatedly come under attack from Ukraine as it serves as a deployment area for the Russian army’s attacks on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and as a logistical hub.

Smaller towns closer to the border have also repeatedly come under fire.

Departing governor Gladkov was believed to have earned Putin’s appreciation due to his handling of the situation, with Russian media speculating that the 57-year-old might be moving on to a government post in Moscow.
